This research project involves finding an article from one of the websites below OR from one of the databases on the MEDIA CENTER website here at Lenape Valley that connects a topic in Chemistry with the concept of Health and Wellness.  An example would be an article that made a connection between the chemistry of carbohydrates and the production of insulin in the body while digesting food.

Once you find the article you must print out a copy (you can do this at home) and write up a summary according to the guidelines given on the reverse of this paper.

Chemistry Enthusiasts (of the American Chemical Society):  This site gives recent articles, past articles and a list of articles by topic about chemistry and health (there are other topics as well).

Chemistry in the news:  This site is updated often and changes but gives links to how chemistry has been in the news. Choose health related articles/topics.

Canadian National Chemistry Week articles:  use this as a portal for links to articles.  Not all are on health related topics but many are.

 Summary write-up guidelines

Ø        Bibliography for the article (using the correct format).

Ø        One paragraph summary (maximum of 1/3 of a typed, double-spaced page with 1” margins and Times New Roman 10 point font).

Ø        Connection to Chemistry paragraph.  Using your textbook and Mrs. Clifford as a resource, come up with a very general connection between the health/wellness topics of the article with chemistry.  For example…if your article is on the digestion of carbohydrates and insulin you should discuss what a carbohydrate is, what digestion involves in terms of chemistry, what enzymes are involved, how acid in the stomach is involved, etc.

Ø        Formulas and/or diagrams of reactions, molecules, ions or atoms involved.  Find out something about the chemicals in the article and show their formulas (element symbols and subscripts or superscripts) and draw models of the molecule (or print them out from the article) or write out chemical equations given in the article.

Ø         Identify all of the elements used in the article/topic by their symbol and name from the periodic table.

Ø        Connection to YOUR EVERYDAY life.  Conclude your write-up by taking the health/wellness topic in your article and connecting it to your everyday life.  How does your knowledge of chemistry improve your appreciation/understanding of the health issue and how will this knowledge enable you to live a more healthy life and make better choices toward wellness.
