HONOR CONDUCT/CONSEQUENCES

 

Honor Policy Regulation

 

 

A.        Definition

 

For the purpose of this regulation, an Honor Code Violation will include cheating in any form. It will not be restricted to, but shall include:

 

1.      The giving and receiving of answers in major or minor testing situations;

2.      Intentional plagiarism or the submission of nonoriginal work such as, term papers, reports, projects, or presentations.        

 

B.        Responsibility           

 

                        The Administration:

 

1.      Will promulgate this regulation to all teachers, parents/guardians, and pupils.

2.      Insure that due process procedures are followed and provisions of the policy will be fairly and consistently enforced.

 

C.        Responsibility           

 

                        The Teacher:

 

1.   Must insure that all students are informed in writing of the expectations and standards for all assessment activities.  They are to promote a classroom atmosphere conductive to honest academic achievement. A review of school and class standards is to take place at the beginning of each school year:

2.   Must inform pupils who are apprehended in the act of cheating that they will be given a permanent grade of zero for the test,

      quiz, paper, or other material on which the cheating occurred. The teacher must submit a written referral to the assistant

      principal indicating just cause for the honor code violation, including a copy of the work.

3.      Will maintain a copy of the paper, quiz etc., for the remainder of the school year, after which it will be expunged from the pupil’s file;

4.      Will immediately report the incident to the individual pupil’s parents and their guidance counselor.

5.      Will meet with the assistant Principal, guidance counselor, student, and parents, to discuss the implications of this offense which will be clearly outlined for them;

 

D.             Responsibility      

 

                             The Guidance Counselor:

 

      1.  Will immediately notify the faculty advisor of the National Honor Society if the pupil is either a member of the National Honor Society or eligible for membership within that school year if an honor code violation has been substantiated.

 

E.              Honor Code Definitions

           

Definitions (Definitions include but are not limited to the following)

 

CHEATING

 

  • Copying from another student or allowing one’s work to be copied.
  • Giving or receiving information during a test or quiz.
  • Using unauthorized “cheat sheets,” study aids, notes, books, or other information during a test or quiz.
  • Pilfering or intending to pilfer a quiz, test, or examination, etc.
  • Giving assignments, quizzes, tests, and or examination answers contrary to the directions of the teacher.
  • Handing in work done in collaboration with another student or students contrary to the directions of the teacher.
  • Failing to comply with previously reviewed classroom expectations & standards.

 

PLAGIARIZING

 

  • Intentionally or purposefully copying information from work completed from another student.

  • Intentionally presenting as one’s own, the work or opinions of someone else without proper written acknowledgement, or situation.
  • Using any unauthorized resources for assignments when instructed by the teacher not to do so.

 

B.                 Consequences

 

* Consequences – When an honor code has been substantiated and due process completed, consequences are as follows:

 

First Offense

1.      Grade of zero for the specific assignment/test.

2.      Detention.

3.      One calendar year probation, prior to eligibility into the NHS.

4.      Removal from NHS.

5.      Probation for any student holding a leadership position in school ;( i.e. Student Government, Team Captain, Drum major. 

 

Second Offense

1.      All of the above as well as three days detention.

2.      Ineligibility for NHS.

3.      Suspension from all extra-curricular activities for three days.

4.      Removal from leadership positions

 

Third Offense

 

1.      All of the above.

2.      In-school suspension for three days.

 

Subsequent Offense

1.      All of the above.

2.      Additional consequences.
