Lenape Valley's German Folk Club completed a pair of performances--the 48th Annual German-American Steuben Parade on 5th Avenue (New York City) and the annual Oktoberfest at Germania Park ( Dover, NJ)--Saturday, September 17, under the supervision of German Instructor Frau Sandra Newcomer.
Lenape Valley sent 47 GFC members to march on Fifth Ave. in the 48th Annual Steuben Parade, in what has become an annual invitation for the Folk Club. The group performed song and dance in front of dignitaries in the Grand Stand. William Hetzler, General Chairman of the Parade, called the event "a most colorful, lively and impressive ethnic celebration."
After that performance, The Folk Club then traveled to Germania Park, where they completed a 45-minute performance which included traditional German dances, such as Sieben Schritt (Seven Step) and Zillertaler Laendler (the Ziller Valley Waltz). Also performing were the GFC Cowbell ringers, with a rendition of Edelweiss, and several selections by the GFC Oompah Band, under the direction of student leader John Hebble. More than 70 German Folk Club members and their families attended the event.
In addition to Saturday's Lenape Valley's Folk Club also performed at the Annual German Heritage Festival (sponsored by the German Heritage Council) Sunday, September 11, 2005, where traditional German foods, specialty books, clothing, candies, music, folk dancing, stage shows featuring popular artists from Germany were on display. 30 performers journeyed to PNC New Jersey State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ for the event. Newcomer noted that besides their two performances at the Mall and Entertainment Center, the LVR performers were also invited to attend the 3:30 stage show.
